Hg2 : The Hedonist

Sea Containers

For a taste of transatlantic cuisine with an up-close-and-personal view of the River Thames, Sea Containers is the place to go. The restaurant is found within the Mondrian London hotel, which is itself found within the old Sea Containers House on the South Bank. It’s like a stylish ship within a ship concept. In fact, there are maritime touches throughout the decor, from the gleaming copper-clad hull you notice on the way in, to the yellow submarine you’ll spot hanging above the bar.

Speaking of the bar, it’s got a kind of futuristic diner feel to it, making it the perfect spot to tuck into the American classics on the menu – everything from chicken and waffles to cobb salad and mac and cheese. But the menu takes its inspiration from around the globe. There are lamb meatballs served with a Moroccan-spiced vinaigrette, raw scallops laced with ginger, shallots, a sesame dressing and a splash of delicious Arbequina olive oil, as well as pillowy gnocchi with a tomato fondue and parmesan.

Week-round, Sea Containers attracts a crowd eager to tuck in and admire the views – both of the city beyond and the sleek space within the restaurant. But during the summer months, try to snag a seat on the riverside terrace for added ambience. Drinks-wise, the hard shakes or a Bloody Mary would be ideal during the popular weekend brunch, otherwise there’s a seriously comprehensive list, including Japanese whiskies and a huge range of other international spirits, well-mixed cocktails, beer, wine and softer options, like artisanal Joe’s Teas and cold-pressed juices to enjoy week-round.
