Hg2 : The Hedonist

With a dinky terrace parked next to the uninspiring Marnixstraat, and away from Jordaan’s more leafy alleyways, Semhar is easy to miss. But, it is worth a diversion if you’re close to Westerpark or the back of the Jordaan and fancy some East African flavour. The Enjera served up here is on a par with anything you’ll find in Eritrea or Ethiopia, and not too dulled for sensitive Dutch palates. The menu is simple, with a choice of just five main dishes, which offer mixed combinations of meats, stews, curries and roots all pulped down in the traditional style and served with thin spongy bread in lieu of cutlery. Service is slow, but smiley enough to make you forgive.
