For live music in Lisbon the most reputable, and accordingly expensive, of Lisbon’s fado houses, Senhor Vinho is owned by the world-famous singer Maria Da Fé. Occasionally Maria takes to the dining floor, but more often the overtly sweet but painfully tragic tones of rising star Mariza can be heard.
Seven different singers perform in rotation basis at 20-minute intervals during the course of the evening. The food served is excellent, but tables are filled quickly. Opened in 1975, the building was once a bakery and the giant brick oven is now a waiting area for artists preparing to perform.
Although large tour groups form the bulk of guests, Senhor Vinho has maintained a proud sense of sophistication. As up-market as fado gets.
