The Shark is a rare exception to the generally quite reliable unwritten local rule that one should never descend steps in Baku in search of a drink. It is also a welcome addition to the Hg2 short list of ex-pat pubs that are worth a visit. The managers – one Azeri, one British – have done a great job here and the friendly atmosphere pulls in a regular crowd of Azeris and (mainlyrnBritish) ex-pats alike. As usual, there is a pool table and a menu of the usual, well-priced pub grub fare, as well as a happy hour, live sports on large screens and a decent weekend fry-up. What this place has that others may lack, however, is atmosphere, whether by dint of the better-than-average décor or a more than usually personal touch from the staff, the Shark has got something going on.
