Hg2 : The Hedonist

Shochu Lounge

With this institution for drinking in London, feudal Japan is brought to the heart of London’s medialand, courtesy of Rainer Becker, the restaurateur behind Zuma and Roka. As you may have deduced, shochu shots are the bar’s signature drink: vodka-like spirits infused with herbs and fruits, said (by whom is debatable) to be medicinal. What’s undeniable is that they’re dangerously addictive. Try a Hello Kitty (shochu, raspberries, rose, lemon and sparkling water) while lounging in the bar’s seductive rustic setting, replete with low tables and vast wooden vats (apparently used for brewing shochu), and you won’t want to leave. Hunger is not a problem either. The Lounge is located directly below Roka, so you can order any of the ludicrously tasty sushi without even having to trouble yourself from your plush red seat. As befits the location, it’s frequently packed with PRs, graphic designers and music industry types all rinsing their expense accounts. And come the weekend, you’ll likely bump into a D-list celeb hoping to be papped: Britain’s own feudal system, if you like.
