Snake Pit Ale House
There’s ‘dive bar chic’ and then there’s just ‘dive bar,’ and the Pit is unapologetically in the latter category (it offers Pabst Blue Ribbon on tap, for goodness sake). Its regular clientele, ranging from Melrose hipsters to sports bar staples to slumming stars and studio execs, often ups the lowbrow appeal (or brings it down, on occasion). The veteran bar staff is one of most gregarious in town, unless, of course, you’re annoying them, in which case you’ll know about it: the beloved T will boot your butt out herself if you cross her. It’s often crowded, about the only frills offered are the tabletop Galaga game at one of the booths and the seemingly out-of-place Internet jukebox, and it boasts some of the gnarliest bathrooms in town – and yet we loved Snake Pit at first bite, fabulous flaws and all.
