Hg2 : The Hedonist

Song Que

In the heart of the Little Vietnam that this stretch of Hackney’s Kingsland Road represents, Sông Quê has a vast menu – one that hides in bits and pieces of heavily sauced Cantonese dishes among Vietnamese pho, noodle and rice assemblies and authentically light and fragrant seafood and meat dishes. The service is hit and miss at times, as is the cooking, but it’s stupidly cheap, the pho, for example, easily a meal in itself. They come with bowls of raw bean shoots and basil leaves, that you add as required, to bulk up your basic broth of rice noodles, coriander and onion, plus whatever protein you’ve plumped for in the one of 20-odd varieties on offer. As Marina O’Loughlin, restaurant critic of Metro, puts it, Eat till you bust and the waiters are laughing at you for about £20 a head.””
