South Place Hotel
Found between Shoreditch’s achingly cool café-cum-bar-cum-cinema hangouts and Bank’s towering capitalist temples, South Place Hotel lays claim to the title of the only independent luxury hotel in the City. But this is luxury with some serious East End style. Designed by Conran + Partners, the 80 rooms here feature pops of colour, limited-edition prints, contemporary furnishings and high-end tech, like mood lighting and impressive Bang & Olufsen televisions.
Considering that South Place Hotel is the brainchild of restaurateurs D&D London (they of Skylon fame), it’s no surprise that the food on offer here is a massive draw. The hotel’s Michelin-starred rooftop restaurant, Angler, serves up superlative British seafood (the terrace area is popular whatever the weather), while on the ground floor, the South Place Chop House is a go-to restaurant for seasonally inspired, locally sourced and expertly grilled dishes.
Elsewhere in the hotel, guests will find a library bar and lounge named after the original Bond villain, Le Chiffre, which offers snacks, cocktails and oodles of cool. There’s even a Secret Garden where you can indulge in Champagne and cigars, and a decadent spa should you need to unwind even further.
