Sowohlalsauch is one of Berlin’s consistently popular cafés and you’ll have to be fast to bag a table at this local favourite. Weekend or weekday – there’s never any respite as Berliners return again and again for the reliably good food and fantastic home-made cakes. In fact, combined with the excellent coffee blends, it’s the perfect spot to indulge in Germany’s afternoon tradition of ‘kaffee und kuchen’. Taking the Berlin penchant for a late breakfast to the extreme, a mouth-watering menu of hot and cold dishes is served until 11pm. Accordingly, however, prices are slightly above average. As is typical of the area, during the day the place swarms with young mums and toddlers with their state-of-the-art buggies designed to trip unaware waiting staff. But as evening arrives so does a refreshingly diverse crowd – from boho students to old school GDR residents. If space is limited inside, take a pew on one of the benches outdoors where gas heaters and blankets provide ample warmth.
