Jazz purists tend to turn their nose up at this more mainstream music bar as Speakeasy straddles a broad divide between traditional jazz and palatable middle-of-the-road and the music is subsequently diluted. But it’s enough to keep a heaving crowd happy.
Expect to hear jazz, funk and blues regularly with occasional, more heavily promoted events. Early evening steak and chips are served at candlelit wooden tables, but arrive late and it’s standing-room only. The wealthy jet-set that cruises this dockland stretch has taken to using the bar as a post-dinner mid-week port of call. The bar is owned by the sons of fado singer Carlos do Carmo.
