Sqirl
Inscrutable name aside (is that “skirl” or “squirrel”?), Sqirl is just the kind of laidback, tasty café that epitomizes the chilled-out California mindset. Opened by the combined forces of Squirl’s pro jam-maker Jessica Koslow and coffee aficionados Kyle Glanville and Charles Babinski, this hybrid spot is at once a bakery in Los Angeles and a destination coffee spot. Seating is haphazard (lawn chairs, crates), but guests don’t seem to mind; cappuccinos are made with freshly-pressed almond milk for a sweet and dairy-free alternative; porridge is served with house-made preserves (blackberry and thyme, raspberry and Tahitian vanilla bean); to-go cups are glass mason jars instead of cardboard cups, because this is LA and saving the rainforest is something people here get pretty passionate about. Though its various toasts are noteworthy, a selection of other eats – the popular brown rice bowl with lemon, kale pesto, feta, and tomatoes – keeps visitors well fed.
