Hg2 : The Hedonist

This is the largest lift system in the valley, and although it doesn’t give access to the same powder runs in Val d’Anniviers offered by Zinal and Grimentz, there is some great off-piste skiing to be found and many pockets of deep fresh snow. That said, there are more steep descents than first meet the eye; the Pas de Boeuf is an excellent long red cruise – its 1,200-vertical-metres is a real thigh-burner for anyone trying to ski it in one go. One of the best runs here is the Illhorn Couloir, easily accessed from the top of the Illhorn T-bar. Nearly 40-degrees steep, it’s followed by open slopes that bring you back around to the bottom of the lift. There are also couloirs along the Arete des Ombreintses, a ridge that separates St. Luc from Chandolin, but most of these have a gradient of 45 to 50 degrees making them much more extreme than the Illhorn run. Beware of the rocks – they’ve claimed many victims over the years.
