Well known in Stockholm for its traditional cakes and atmosphere, Sturekatten is in some ways reminiscent of the equally old-fashioned Vetekatten. Once you’ve climbed the winding, rickety staircase you enter a maze of rooms all split up to create different coffee salons.
rnAlthough slightly kitsch, it feels pretty authentic and any gaudiness is lost in the superiority of the cakes. From the traditional prinsesstarta (a cream and marzipan confection) to other, nameless creations, it would be criminal not to try something – but once you have, it’s almost impossible not to take home most of what is left on the counter.
rnPopular with locals, the place nevertheless fills up with tourists wanting a piece of ‘real’ Stockholm. This is one of the few cafés here to feature heavily in guidebooks.
