Sugar Sweet Sunshine
There have been a million (well, maybe a half dozen or so) off-shoots of the cupcake frenzy started by Magnolia Bakery on Bleecker Street in the West Village. But the thing about Sugar Sweet Sunshine on the Lower East Side is that they are what a cupcake purveyor ought to be: friendly, the polar opposite of the grumpy, eye-rolling counter staff at Magnolia.
Sugar Sweet has pretty much the same playlist – adorable, pastel frosted cupcakes, hassock-high red-velvet and coconut cakes, but somehow the accommodating, smiley service makes all taste just that much sweeter.
Bar Boulud’s Damian Sansonetti agrees with a cherry on top: “Sugar Sweet Sunshine bakery on the LES [has] way better cupcakes than Magnolia, and they have flavors, too.”
