Hg2 : The Hedonist

Sunset Marquis Hotel

Launched in 1963 as the Hyatt House a.k.a. the ‘Riot House,’ the accommodation in LA of choice for the rambunctiously rowdy Rock God scene – Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, U2, you name it, they slept it off here (the hotel even boasts an on-site recording facility) – The Sunset Marquis has been reborn as a study in ultra-cool contradictions. Entering from the Sunset Strip’s all-day din, the tranquility of three Eden-esque acres of lush tropical grounds takes one aback. The clichéd conventioneer décor has finally been chucked, and The Sunset Marquis is now one of the more edgy, modern and elegant places to stay in Los Angeles. So serene, until sundown, when today’s rockers, rappers, and scenesters rise, flocking to the in-house Bar 1200 (often piping in those newly-laid tracks) for after-dark dallying that’d make Keith Moon proud.
