Sydney Opera House
The Sydney Opera House is more than just one of the things to do in Sydney. There are seven venues in total, from the opulent concert hall and 1,507-seat Opera Theatre, to the Drama Theatre, the 398-seat Playhouse theatre and the Studio theatre. It’s not just opera and ballet, however; there’s something to suit everyone’s tastes, from contemporary music gigs, classy big-band acts, comedy and cabaret – and various itineraries to help plan your visit listed on the exhaustive website. The Opera House deals with more than seven million visitors every year, so we won’t add to it other than to advise having a cocktail at the outdoor harbour-view Opera Bar (see Drink) and an unforgettable dinner at Guillaume at Bennelong (see Eat). Even if you don’t manage to see a performance, at least walk around the foreshore and admire the thing. It’s one of the most recognisable and photographed structures for a reason, covered by around one-million white tiles. It’s pretty bloody amazing, is what a Sydneysider would say.
