Hg2 : The Hedonist

This Mayfair favourite has been leading the way for haute Indian cuisine since 1995, becoming the first Indian restaurant in London to receive a Michelin star. Atul Kochhar, its award-winning head chef for six years, was something of a celebrity, but Karunesh Khanna and Manav Tuli have since taken the helm in the kitchen with a menu that focuses on traditional regional techniques and tandoor-based dishes. Recently reopened after an extensive renovation, the dining room is spread over two floors, the basement space brightened with a sea green and cream colour palette complemented by white marble and deep, dark leather banquettes, while the upstairs area offers a light, airy atmosphere with views over Queen street.

Two open kitchens occupy a corner of the downstairs dining room, competing to create accomplished tandoor and grill-based dishes. Menu highlights include a fragrant pink peppercorn chicken tikka, sweet, flaky sea bass cooked with coconut and chilli, and earthy goat chops, so tender they slip off the bone. Seasonal lunch menus offer a way in for those on a budget, otherwise it’s expensive. But for the price you also get some of the best service in London and an unbeatable location in the heart of Mayfair.
