Never try to deny their throngs of fans of their fix of the Tartine Bakery, one of the best bakeries in San Francisco. They will be ruthless in the pursuit of their sugary cinnamon-orange morning bun, Scharffen Berger pain au chocolat, or lemon meringue cake. Better to give in and join the line out the door, as this is perhaps the best bakery in town. The crowd dyed-in-the-wool San Franciscans that hangs out here will delight most any visitor. Doesn’t anyone around here have a job? No. They are all freelancers, artists, dot-com millionaires in disguise, or Noe Valley mummies. Studded lesbians, bike messengers, woolly intellectuals, keen-eyed novelists, they’re all here, worshipping the almighty latte. For lunch, have a pressed mozzarella and tapenade sandwich and a glass of wine.
