Tengri Umai Gallery

Despite the ancient mythological origins of the name, Tengri Umai gallery focuses on resolutely modern and contemporary works from a roster of often avant-garde artists from across the CIS, displayed in a stark, minimalist space. Director, patron and former nuclear physicist Vladimir Filatov established it as the first private art gallery in Kazakhstan in 1992. New exhibitions are staged approximately once a month alongside installations, seminars, charitable events and audio visual presentations; and may include paintings, photography, sculpture or video pieces. Finding the gallery isn’t altogether straightforward but the easiest way is to turn left on to Baiseitov from the pedestrianised Arbat section of Zhibek Zholy, walk uphill for about 20-metres and turn left into the alleyway just past the telecoms building. Follow the curved building in front of you round to the left and you will find the entrance.
