The Beaconsfield
Housed in the historic former Molson’s Bank (the name is carved into the scalloped grey-stone exterior), it has a classic look that’s effortlessly cool. Inside, it’s a warm candlelit space with vintage appeal: a zinc bar, cherry leather banquettes and ornate chandeliers do the business.
Despite the huge windows overlooking the street, this is not a look-at-me scene. There may be a few statement hats on creative heads, but nobody takes themselves too seriously. The action spills out into the small side terrace where smokers congregate under the tree.
There’s a bistro menu, with a cheap and cheerful special between 5-7pm that comes with a pint of Labatt 50. The solid drinks list has a good range of scotch and tequila, and a famous French Martini to boot. Music is smooth style offering hip-hop, soul, funk and reggae with volume that cranks up into the night.
