The Blue Elephant
In a town obsessed with international cuisine there’s a plethora of restaurants in Beirut to choose from; however, Thai restaurant The Blue Elephant remains a perennial favourite for a night out. Although not particularly chic, it has a vibe all of its own and the location, next to the Corniche with views over the Mediterranean, makes a pleasant change from Gemayzeh and Monnot Street.
The décor is a trifle tacky – think waterfalls and giant goldfish, enlivened during August by Thai folk dancers – but it is actually fantastically relaxing. The food is typical Thai – chicken satay, tom yam prawn soup and a fine emerald chicken, for example – and the drinks plentiful and simple. All in all, a fun and relaxed place to come, and great for a stroll by the sea afterwards to aid the digestion.
