The Country Club
In a neighbourhood of funky shotgun houses and dive bars, this well-manicured mansion, The Country Club – with a private, gay-friendly pool where clothing is optional – has always been infamous. Recently, the front of the house opened to the public as an ambitious, but well-priced restaurant. Bywater hipsters and the gay regulars lounge in rattan chairs on the palm-shaded porch while nibbling on coriander-crusted crab cakes or hanger steaks with truffled macaroni cheese. The slightly unfocused menu rarely misfires, but the bar, which might mix the best Pimm’s cup in town, never quite does. The immodest can work off their meal with a quick dip.
