Hg2 : The Hedonist

The Halkin

It may have an ornate Georgian façade, but the interior of this elegant, five-star hotel is sublimely understated compared to some of the glitzy London luxury hotels. Armani-uniformed staff glide around an angular white marble lobby, beyond which are curved charcoal corridors and 41 muted bedrooms in soft, earthy tones with strong black accents. There’s a prevailing sense of stealth wealth and the emphasis here is on luxurious functionality – high-tech bedside control panels operate everything from the lights to the Do Not Disturb sign; capacious marble bathrooms have exceptionally deep tubs and a generous smattering of COMO Shambhala products. The nearby COMO Shambhala Urban Escape (that’s a gym and spa, in English) at The Halkin’s much larger sister hotel, the Metropolitan London (Old Park Lane, W1; 020 7447 1000), is also at your disposal. The hotel restaurant, Nahm – London’s first Michelin-starred Thai – is famed for its elaborate dishes containing up to 20 ingredients. Excellent for ‘event’ dining and for lovers of spicy food, but for Armani-like simplicity, guests might prefer the Japanese fare (and star-spotting) at Nobu in the Metropolitan London instead.
