The Marksman
The Marksman has recently undergone a rebrand, and much to all of Hackney’s delight, it’s worked a treat. Although still a “proper” East End pub (wooden panels: check, green leather banquettes: check) The Marksman has a radically altered menu thanks to new chefs and owners Tom Harris and Jon Rotherham, formerly of St. Johns in Smithfield.
Hearty starters like Beef and barley buns with horseradish or fried potatoes with burnt onion mayonnaise have made it a go-to hangover cure site, whilst locally brewed beers on tap are choice enough to tip you off the wagon again. The Marksman is a relief from the wannabe Brooklyn bars saturating East London, whilst still avoiding the descent into depersonalised gastropub nonsense thanks to a legion of merry, pint-nursing locals and a classic 50s jukebox.
