Hg2 : The Hedonist

The Mix

Lisbon’s slickest spot for seaside dining yearns for hipness not customary found this side of the Cote d’Azure. Perched atop of volcanic-like granite rocks, over which occasional gusty wisps of Atlantic sea spray across Carrera-donning diners, The Mix is slick, stylish and desperately cool, which you’ll either love or hate.

The décor complements the imposing geology outside, where black wood and marble are used throughout the interiors and offset by cream tones in the form of Philippe Starck-inspired mushroomed chandeliers and crisp white table clothes. Most nights, Local DJ, Lyl Marta Liliana Barros spins smooth house tunes throughout dinner, while German chef Daniel Schlaipfer mans the kitchen, which is visible through the dining room window. Split into three rooms, diners have the option of a private dining room, the main room and the ocean-top terrace or the sushi bar.

The food – which appears to be an after thought to most of the stick-thin body beautiful diners - is Eurasian fusion. Presentation is everything with a wonderfully arranged dishes such as Thai salad of local vegetables and tuna, and duck double with pistachio, pumpkin and ginger, all of which appear on the plate as if arranged by Andy Warhol. There is a nagging feeling of style over substance, but when there’s this much style, who really cares?
