The Ned

Few hotels have as monied a past as The Ned – the property was once the Midland Bank HQ, one of the largest banks in the world back in the early 20th century. Neglected, the building stood empty for eight years; a waste of stunning Lutyens architecture and unexplored potential. That is, until it came to the attention of Soho House visionary, Nick Jones, back in 2012.

The historic building is now The Ned, a boutique hotel right smack in the centre of the City of London, original features and all. The banking hall, for example, with its 92 African verdite columns and rows of Grade I-listed walnut banking counters, is now home to seven of the hotels 10 restaurants and bars (three, in true Soho House fashion, are members and hotel guests only). There’s the Northern Italian Cecconi’s with its Venetian flair, the New York-style deli, Zobler’s (serving everything from matzo ball soup to NY cheesecake), and the Asian-Pacific-inspired Kaia, to name but a few. Basically, whatever you’re in the mood for, you’re bound to find here.

Looking elsewhere, guests at The Ned can enjoy the Barber & Parlour, a range of beauty and grooming spaces designed to keep the monied and beautiful looking exactly that. And in serious style, too, with luxurious Cowshed products abounding – both here and in the guestrooms.

Speaking of: there are 252 rooms, all told, each more beautiful than the last, starting with the “Crash Pads” at the smaller end of the room spectrum, moving through “Cosy”, right up to “Grand Heritage”. They’re all impeccably decorated, with colourful, high-end rugs on warm wooden floors, vintage furnishings like the vanities in the Medium rooms, and bespoke wallpaper. When you throw in The Ned’s Vault Bar, which is exactly what it sounds like (right down to the 3,600 safety deposit boxes), and the rooftop pool and terraces overlooking St Paul’s Cathedral, it’s not hard to see why one look at this hotel has people clambering over themselves to join Ned’s Club.
