The Orient

Building on the success of its restaurant, Mosaic (see Eat) – recently awarded the title of South Africa’s best restaurant, The Orient’s reputation is growing in stature. Situated in the veld, just 40 minutes from Sandton, it is a homage to the Middle East and might be more at home in an exclusive suburb of Marrakech or Damascus than Johannesburg. Set amid paved terraces and palm trees, the Moorish style incorporates castellated walls and towers, replete with beautifully intricate woodwork and balconies. Inside, there are twelve suites taking their name from sub-continent, North African and Silk Route trading posts, each are furnished individually, with the antiques and hand-crafted furniture bearing a loose connection to their eponymous locations. A swimming pool, private cinema, croquet lawn and private balconiesrncomplete the swanky boutique feel. But, as we mentioned at the outset, the real attraction is the Mosaic restaurant, done up like a North African kasbah, where supreme international cooking is complimented by a 15,000 bottle wine cellar.
