Asking directions for Dick’s Bar (aka The Pink Chihuahua) of all the bars in London you could ask for amongst Soho’s seedy sex shops might seem like something of a stitch-up. Especially when, technically, there is no Dick’s Bar, and certainly no signage for it. The cosy, 48-cover basement lounge at new Mexican cantina El Camion is so-called because it’s helmed by Dick Bradsell, widely acknowledged to be king of cocktails and all-round industry Gandalf – wherever he works ends up being called Dick’s bar (‘If you want nice drinks, you need me making them’). The Mexican theme continues(ish) downstairs, with a menu of ambrosial margaritas, daiquiris and batidas (actually a Brazilian blend with cachaça, fruit and sweetened condensed milk – it probably boosts voluptuousness), and as long as the ingredients are stocked, you can order off-menu. You could invite an invention (previously by Bradsell, the Bramble and the Vodka Espresso) but be warned, that’s the fastest way to get a bad drink. This is an after-work joint for local industry insiders (for whom work finishes at midnight) who know to stick with perfectly crafted cocktails, and that the best secret party is hidden in the arse-end of Soho. NB: Entry only through day membership, gained by asking nicely when eating at El Camion.
