The Prince of Wales
Eschew Clapham’s bland high street populated with suits and Sloanes, and make for the quaint Old Town and its local pub, The Prince of Wales – one of the few true originals of London’s pubs (clue: it’s the corner pub with blue neon POW POW POW on the walls). A favourite with local fashion doyenne Vivienne Westwood, this pub is jam-packed full of 1960s ephemera and car-boot junk – artificial limbs even – much of which is strung from the ceiling. Unlike other self-consciously ‘eccentric’ pubs, where jumble seems to have been stage-managed for maximum quaintness, the POW is more an authentic monument to the work of a lifelong hoarder with a taste for taxidermy, toys and oddities of all descriptions. The music veers towards the indie end of the spectrum and is not so loud that you can’t chat with Dame Westwood about design. No credit cards, no food – just drinks (and real ale), kitsch and chat, and a great big soul.
