Hg2 : The Hedonist

The Principal Madrid

Talk about a prime location. Not only can guests at The Principal Madrid gaze out at the city skyline through gently swaying cypress and olive trees as they sip cocktails on the hotel’s beautiful rooftop terrace, but after descending a few floors, they can saunter out onto the ritzy, incredibly well-connected expanse of the Gran Via. It’s safe to say that the Principal Madrid, a relative newcomer to the city’s hotel scene, having opened its doors in early 2015, is making great use of one of Madrid’s best addresses.

In addition to La Terraza, the stunning rooftop terrace (all carved wooden benches and rich red accents), which doubles as both a bar and a restaurant, the Principal Madrid has a Wellness Centre and numerous other in-house dining options overseen by talented chef and Michelin-star recipient Ramón Freixa. Even though the Gran Via’s cocktail and dining scene is rightly renowned, there’s more than enough to tempt guests and visitors to stay within the hotel’s stylish, vaguely palatial Spanish Renaissance-style facade.

The 76 rooms and suites, like the hotel’s public spaces, are another reason. Flawlessly designed – featuring countless shades of grey, high-end furniture like the seminal BKF chair, and plenty of palatial original features (high ceilings, stained glass, iron railings) – designer Pilar Garcia-Nieto and studio Luzio more than delivered on creating the elite British member’s club and moody Manhattan loft vibe that they were aiming for.
