The Providores & Tapa Room
Don’t let the name mislead you: there are many other Spanish restaurants in London, but this isn’t one of them. The chef, Peter Gordon, is from New Zealand, and the word ‘tapa’ refers to the Pacific tribal cloth that decorates one wall of his ground-floor café. Gordon was one of the first chefs to bring Australasian fusion food to Britain and this upstairs-downstairs establishment in Marylebone is a reminder of what made it so exciting. The Tapa Room is a diner-style space with a globetrotting array of grazing dishes, as well as delicious cakes and breakfasts, all served at high communal tables and casual banquettes. The first floor Providores, meanwhile, showcases the full inventive scope of Gordon’s cooking, with its marriage of oriental, middle-eastern and Pacific flavours. Simple white décor reflects the fact that the food is the star – although the fantastic Kiwi wine list merits a visit in its own right.
