The Royal Tulip
The Royal Tulip is a slick stay that indulges the extravagant tastes of Almaty’s residents (we wouldn’t have it any other way). Aside from its accommodations, it attracts a slew of stylish non-guests for its spa, club (Circus), rooftop café and ballroom, which has become the most prestigious place in the city to host parties. Its popularity means the hotel is planning to open a second ballroom, which, it claims, will be the biggest in all of Central Asia. The hotel is located high up on Dostyk Avenue, en route to Medeu and Shymbulak ski resort, making this ideally positioned for those keen to get into the mountains. Apart from a few local restaurants it’s a mostly residential area, so if you want to be in the thick of everything it is probably best to steer clear. The rooms themselves are a touch on the gaudy side but are undeniably luxurious: our favourite is the executive suite, which comes with a Versace-designed bathroom.
