The Satellite

In case you haven’t been paying attention, The Satellite (formerly Spaceland) has been an institution of indie rock music known for breaking new acts both local and international for the best part of two decades. Since opening its doors in 1993 the silver and blue shiny curtain-wrapped stage room has been a must-stop spot for fans and musicians alike; legends and lifelong memories are made here.

The list of critically and commercially successful bands that played this stage before any other club in LA is staggering: Arcade Fire, Peaches, My Morning Jacket, Arctic Monkey, Scissor Sisters, Snow Patrol, The Killers, The Shins – it goes on. Groundbreaking musicians like Weezer, Beck and The White Stripes still stop by on occasion to pay homage to a place that has been so vital to the indie music scene and maybe just to enjoy the cosiness of a small venue (it’s two rooms – one for music, one to chill) full of ardent fans.

But alas, due to rumoured business conflicts between venue owner Jeff Wolfram and Spaceland Productions owner Mitchell Frank, what was Spaceland the club will be called The Satellite, and Spaceland Productions will search for a new home. Do not despair for Satellite however; Jennifer Tefft, who booked talent for Spaceland from 1999-2009, is back, and owner Wolfram claims there won’t be many changes. So Spaceland is losing the iconic name and longtime promoter but keeping the space, the spacey decor, the booker and, hopefully (fingers crossed!), the ability to draw incredible bands to create those memorable experiences fans treasure for life.
