Hg2 : The Hedonist

The Shrub & Shutter

Chris Edwards and Dave Tregenza are two gentlemen who know a good drink when they taste one. Not content with resting on their drink-related laurels, the duo followed the success of their “cocktail counselling and menu creation” consultancy firm with a venture of their very own in 2014. Enter: The Shrub & Shutter.

Found in trendy Brixton, this cocktail bar and restaurant serves bespoke drinks and a menu of modern British cuisine set against interiors of blonde wood and sleek lines. The bright and airy space is filled with leafy plants – not to dissimilar from someone’s stylish dream greenhouse – which fits the apothecary-feel of the cocktail menu.

The front section of the bar is the designated cocktail drinking area where nimble-fingered bartenders can be seen mixing up concoctions like the bar’s namesake Shrub & Shutter (a mix of Whitley Neill gin, Green Chartreuse, cucumber, toasted fennel sugar and Maraschino liqueur) and the “Only God Forgives” (a heady muddle of tequilas, mezcal, fresh raspberries, lime and Szechuan pepper syrup). To say the drinks here were creative would be a serious understatement. You won’t have tasted drinks of their ilk before. Just look to the “Does the Bear Shit in the Woods”, which conjures the pine scents and heady fresh-air feel of the Great Outdoors through St George’s Terroir gin, Akvavit, pine bitters, Cocci Americano and, as a nod to the bear, house-smoked salmon.

Venture further inside and you’ll discover a back room with more seating where you can settle in for a meal. The ever-changing seasonal menu is playful, with a wide range of plates to choose from whenever you visit. Think: seabass with spiced dahl and pickled roots, salt beef sandwiches, or venison carpaccio. But they also host foodie pop-ups so you never know what you might enjoy here from night to night; it’s an enticing prospect.
