The Trails Cafe
Most LA natives have been to Griffith Park at one time or another, whether to visit the Griffith Observatory on a fifth grade field trip or last week for a hike with the pooches. Visitors should not miss this gorgeous 4,000-acre park on the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains comprised of museums, hiking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas and untamed California wilderness. But one park attraction that both natives and visitors often overlook due to its humble façade is The Trails Café on Fern Dell Drive.
This vegan/vegetarian friendly café offers mostly organic, totally delicious quick eats to hikers, bikers and savvy snackers who know what’s what. Situated in a clearing and surrounded by a forest of fresh ferns and redwoods, this tiny wooden shack serves up scrumptious savory turnover-like pies, soups, vegan baked goods made from scratch, sandwiches and coffee house drinks. The savoury meat pie and its vegan counterpart (filled with mushrooms, tempeh and cashews) are favorites, along with the avocado sandwich and vegan lavender vanilla cookies. Not the usual snack shack grease bombs one would expect to find at such a small establishment.
The setting is idyllic and calm, completely removed from the traffic and frazzled LA atmosphere. The outdoor seating with – would you believe it – free WiFi will make you want to stay all day.
