The Wolseley
Everyone says it: the Wolseley has stolen The Ivy’s crown as the top place to see and be seen when dining out in London. And it’s true that no meal here is complete without an amuse-bouche of star-spotting. The glittering restaurant – open from breakfast to dinner since 2003 – is the creation of Christopher Corbin and Jeremy King, the original owners of The Ivy and Le Caprice, and many of their former regulars have followed. The pair is big on the personal approach and you’ll usually find one or the other working the room. There’s a menu of 101 crowd-pleasing continental favourites (from oysters with chorizo to Wiener schnitzel); and the magnificent, Grade II-listed space (built in 1921 as a luxury car showroom for Wolseley Motors) has been remodelled to look like a mittel-European grand café. Peak times in the restaurant tend to get booked up, but there’s also a separate tearoom and bar, and the café menu is served from 7am until midnight; if you can’t get a table for lunch or dinner, pop in for their excellent afternoon tea instead. The amuse-bouches will be no less in evidence.
