Theatre on the Bay
Few theatres in Cape Town are more happpily placed than the aptly-named and flamboyant Theatre on the Bay; be sure to catch the sunset before taking your seats. One of the biggest names in South African theatre, Pieter Toerien is well-known as an astute and seriousrnbusinessman, having produced the local versions of some of the world’s biggest musicals, including most of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s productions, several of which he has toured internationally. He also owns his own stand-alone theatre here in Cape Town. It’s a wonderfully intimate space where you’ll very likely meet artists at the bar after the show, and is well located if you want to head out to any number of bars along the sunset strip afterwards. Although Toerien has staged the likes of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat and Hair in this theatre, it’s more often the domain of smaller dramas, comedies and revues, with plenty of cabaret and stand-up comedy, too.
