Now that the gay community has left much of its former ghetto, Chelsea, to the straight gallery owner set and dug in its heels in Hell’s Kitchen, a little polish is becoming more commonplace in the New York bars in this neighborhood. It is, at least, at this popular Midtown hangout – formerly a carriage house, a warehouse, and a brothel (not all at once) – where two floors of coolly lit lounge play host to mainstream gay professionals and younger Abercrombie types. Boy-toy bartenders grin and bear hordes of adoring customers ordering up – among the typical Martinis, light beers, and shots – specialty drinks such as the Pavlov’s Dog (Stoli Vanil, Midori, lemon sour, and pineapple juice), and Coitus Interruptus (Tanqueray 10, raspberry liqueur, grenadine, lemon, and champagne).
