Three Eight Four
The owners of tapas bar Seven, found in Brixton Market, have thrown open the doors on another venue, Three Eight Four. And the location? Why, Brixton, of course. What once was a edgy neighbourhood has, in the last decade, become a trendy haven for bars and restaurants of all stripes – with Coldharbour Lane as the locus. The general rule of thumb for these places? Distressed (but not too distressed) interiors, creative and well-executed sharing-style dishes, and industrial-strength cocktails. Three Eight Four does all of this and more.
Here, recycled bus seats are used in lieu of actual chairs and light bulbs dangle precariously from the rusty bedspring-ridden ceiling. As for the drinks? Well, the Bombay Kitchen – an alcoholic ode to the Indian restaurant that inhabited the unit previously – is a lethal combination of Opihr spiced gin, Koko Kanu rum and Tabasco, with a twist of mango juice. And that’s just one of the cocktails on offer. There’s also a comprehensive selection of wines, beer and cider should your tastes not run to potent, spirit-laced concoctions.
The food, meanwhile, is a small plates-style menu that’s European in influence, with a few international twists thrown in for good measure. We’re talking dishes like mouthwatering beef brisket served in brioche buns, salt-speckled padron peppers, and crispy avocado wontons (lightly fried filo parcels filled with avocado, jalapenos, spring onion and tabasco). And all of this comes set against a soundtrack of Nineties West Coast Hip-Hop; it’s a great little spot for a drink or a meal any night of the week, just make sure to make a reservation.
