Tokyo Wonder Site
The words Shibuya Workers’ Welfare Hall may not bring to mind the most glamorous of locales. But Kurage is no style-free café. Set in the heart of Shibuya surrounded by the nonstop whirl of teenage crowds and neon stores, it is a stylish refuge from the urban chaos outside.
Dark wood tables, clean modern lines and vertical hanging copper lights create a stylish ambiance. But there is one major pulling point that makes it stand out from other Tokyo cafes: art. Kurage – meaning jellyfish in Japanese – is a collaboration with Tokyo Wonder Site, an edgy art space located just down the corridor in the same building.
As well as having exhibitions on its doorstep, the artworks often overspill into the café with various installations and sculptures popping up. Stop by for a creative cup of tea, a good value set lunch or an early evening drink: the perfect cultural antidote to consumerism-induced fever caused by over shopping.
