TomTom Suites

TomTom isn’t just a delightfully tasteful suite-only hotel, it’s also one that best describes the Beyoglu area’s riches-to-rags-to-riches tale. This Frenchified district was once awash with churches, embassies and merchants’ homes, and TomTom started life as a French law court annex before becoming a Franciscan nunnery. After a period of neglect, it reopened in 2008 as an art-filled boutique hotel run by an experienced manager, Mr. Celal, and his deferential staff. Suites are refined and comfortable, not over-designed or loud. Each has a whacking great bathroom lined with Carrara marble, with a freestanding Jacuzzi-bath as a chic centrepiece. Breakfast is one of the best in the business, with village cheeses from across Turkey and homemade preserves. The morning’s news can be read on one of the half-dozen hotel iPads that are dished out to each table. Sunset drinks and dinner in the rooftop restaurant, La Mouette, are heartily recommended. Nighttime serenity – and security – is assured by the location of the Italian Consulate General across the road.
