Torino Express

A Gemyazeh mainstay, Torino Express is without question one of best little bars in Beirut. An old picture-framing shop, it was one of the first bars to open in the neighbourhood in 2003, and one that saw the potential of the area. Small in size – a mere hole in the wall – Torino Express is a café by day, serving wonderful Italian espressos and paninis; at night it becomes a bar with DJs spinning records (from Nu-Wave Depeche Mode to Jungle Jazz) and accomplished mixologists serving up fantastic cocktails. rn

Lebanese-German owner Andreas Boulos has created an atmosphere second to none – there are no pretensions and the crowd is here to have fun. An all-wood décor is interspersed with antique lamps and old photographs, while Boulos has made a point of retaining the original tiled floor and arched ceiling. Make sure to visit the bathroom: one of Torino’s most original features, it’s all mirrored tiles, funky toiletries and classical music – quite different from the main room.
