U Barba

It’s hard to tell what stays with guests longer after their meal at U Barba is over: the food or the ambience; The food because it’s delicious, and the ambience because U Barba is a warm, welcoming restaurant with its own boules court. What’s not to love about that? The space was once a local bocciofila (boules club), after all. There are twinkling lights strung from the ceilings and solid wooden tables that families, strangers, and friends gather round, with whitewashed brick, the odd Vespa and old leather suitcases mounted on the walls. It’s a glorious mismatch that works effortlessly.

Regardless, whatever it is that lingers long after the meal has ended, U Barba keeps the Milanese coming back night after night, and for lunch on the weekends. It’s a firm local favourite. The food here is traditional Genoese, and made with real love for the cuisine. Here, you’ll find traditional dishes like trofie pasta with green beans, potatoes and pesto. There’s Ligurian-style sea bass, served with pine nuts, potatoes and olives and a Ligurian rabbit casserole. There are marinated, stuffed, and fried “Scabeccio” anchovies, cod salad, and caponata. And, there’s “Erba Luisa”, a Ligurian after-dinner drink.

U Barba is for everyone; groups have their own special sharing menus, and kids have got their own mini menu, too, which of course includes the delicious trofie pasta and a Milanese-style cutlet. They may be kids, but these are kids that get to eat well.
