Did you know that humans have a fifth taste? Besides sweet, sour, salty and bitter it turns out there’s one more thing tickling your taste buds. It’s called umami and there’s a good chance it is found in your favorite foods. At least that’s what creator and self-taught chef/restaurateur Adam Fleishman was banking on when he founded LA favorite Umami Burger. It’s difficult to describe umami without unromantic scientific language but it’s a taste akin to savory – think meats, mushrooms and cheeses; flavours with real depth. When factoring the fifth taste into his burger menu Fleishman created what he calls ‘fine-dining fast food’ and the atmosphere is appropriate. The décor of wood slat walls and neutral colors is relaxing and no-nonsense; the focus here is on the food and company you’re enjoying it with. The service is pleasantly casual, if a bit slow, so stop in with time to savour and bring your appetite because this isn’t the place to eat light and run. Try the Triple Pork Burger, a satisfyingly juicy umami concoction of fresh ground pork, chorizo, applewood smoked bacon and manchego cheese. For vegetarians the Earth Burger with a mushroom and edamame patty smothered in ricotta cheese and truffle aioli is a dreamy alternative to the usual soy burger offered by competitors. Umami Burger offers a collection of old fashioned bottled sodas and the recently added beer and cocktail list is a short but well considered compliment to the food menu. If you’re craving a burger and looking for a unique and delicious alternative to the usual take, don’t miss this place. Your umami receptors will thank you.
