Hg2 : The Hedonist

A bistro in the heart of SoNa, behind the National Theatre, Universal is an atmospheric little French restaurant in Prague with purposefully plain wooden tables and chairs and a bizarre array of decoration on the walls. A long French poem winds around the room, while a moulded elephant’s head hangs near the traffic lights. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense!

Happily, it does offer excellent French cuisine. The menu is not particularly inventive but we enjoyed an excellent lamb with goat’s cheese and thyme, and a delectable salmon tartare. Owned and run by a very pleasant couple who are on hand to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Frequented by a mixed clientele of locals, ex-pats and the occasional adventurous tourist who has escaped from the predictability of the town centre.
