Uspensky Cathedral

Built in honour of the Dormition of the Theotokos, the Uspensky (Assumption) Cathedral was the first to be built in Central Asia in many decades. Construction began in 2005, but the church was not officially consecrated until January 2010. Its contrast in size from the older cathedral off Respublika is impressive to say the least. Standing 68m high and able to house 4,000 worshippers, the cathedral is crowned by several golden onion domes said to collectively weigh some 78 tonnes. A remarkable sight indeed.
