When Stanley Kubrick was envisaging the retro-futuristic aesthetic of 2001: A Space Odyssey, it’s fair to say that he probably didn’t imagine it was a look that would ever become popular on terra firma and yet it has, in one of the best bars in Fitzrovia, London. After descending a darkened staircase, the senses are truly assaulted by a room which is almost entirely pure snow-white, and blindingly so. LED mood lighting further add to the blaze, casting a neon glow over the distinctive Panton chairs while crystal chandeliers shimmer above. Vanilla is the brainchild of Mattheiu Destandau and Xenios Voniatis – two men who have punch when it comes to high-concept, highly exclusive ventures. Destandau was formerly a manager at Firevault, an exotic restaurant housed in a designer fireplace showroom, while Voniatis hails from Milk and Honey, the New York members’ club. Together they have contrived a bar-cum-restaurant-cum-lounge that is pure sci-fi. Indeed, everything here screams OTT, in-your-face luxury, including the drinks menu, which includes a top selection of wines, champagnes and cocktails. Then again, for the crowd of visiting Eurocash, media stalwarts and clued-up fashionistas, money really is no object if it buys this kind of show.
