Volksbuhne
This unusual Berlin theatre, the ‘People’s Stage’ follows a radical, non-conformist form and is never afraid of controversy. This is largely thanks to maverick impresario Frank Castorf and his team of provocative actors and guest directors. The theatre accordingly attracts a young, avant-garde Berlin crowd. The imposing building dates back to 1913, and was built by Oskar Kaufmann. Two salons also run independent events: The Roter Salon (see PARTY) often runs electronic club nights and after-show parties for gigs held in the Volksbühne; the Grüner Salon is the preserve of a more sedate crowd and holds a weekly salsa night every Thursday. Smaller performances also take place at the Volksbühne am Prater, Kastanianallee 7-9
