As anticipated, there’s no shortage of excellent wine bars in Cape Town. This one, however, rather stands out as a large lounge-bar specialising in wine in the middle of the biggest and most popular winelands region in the country. Wijnhuis, which translated simply means ‘Winehouse’, naturally has an epic winelist, representing a huge array of vintages and blends from over 60 individual estates. This being a university town, education happens on all levels, and you could develop considerable oeno-expertise in a single sitting here. Rather cosily built into a large loft-style setting on the first floor of a building that’s right in the hub of Stellenbosch’s bustling central bar and restaurant quarter, Wijnhuis comprises a cheerful warren of spaces, from a sky-light bedecked conservatory-style dining area that feels almost open-air, to a more intimate and tucked away section, and of course a large lounge-style tasting lounge with a pub-style bar, TVs showing important sports games, and décor comprising mostly huge stocks of wine, in boxes and on shelves. And when you need to stretch your legs or simply want a breather, there’s a doorway with direct access to the adjacent SMAC (Stellenbosch Modern and Contemporary) art gallery, which on occasion houses extraordinary exhibitions.
