Wild Asia
This fun new addition to Almaty’s ever-improving restaurant scene opened in 2011 and serves up the best of South-East Asian cuisine at reasonable prices: the menu contains everything from Japanese sushi to Chinese spring rolls, Malay curries to Singapore noodles. The restful, chocolate-toned space has something of a jungle theme going on, with animal portraits lining the walls, Nat Geo Wild on the TV and even a resident mascot, Larry the lizard, who appears on the restaurant’s logo. It can be hard to choose from a menu jam-packed with tempting dishes such as Thai tom yum soup, beef rendang curry and Chinese fried rice, but somehow we managed. Decadent desserts round things off nicely, including red wine- and cinnamon-poached pears and ginger crème brûlée. And it’s not just dinner Wild Asia’s good for, either; pop in during the evening for a drink and soak up the cool lounge-bar vibe, aided by the nine-page cocktail list. You’ll stumble home.
